GPWA Times Magazine - Issue 41 - July 2018
“Regulationwill be thenail in the coffin for 99%of all affiliates marketing toU.S. players . . . This rulingwas great for operators, gamblers, teamowners, land-based casinos andalmost everyonebut affiliates. When the government gets theirhands onsomething, the littleplayers almost always lose. Watchand learn.” nsawins , GPWA Private Member “It brings amultibillion-dollar industry out of the shadows and into the sunlight, where its integrity can be guaranteed and consumers can be better protected . . . I think that the increased transparency thatwill accompany more legalized betting around the countrywill only further protect against potential corruption.” Ted Leonsis , owner of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics and the NHL’s Washington Capitals “There are rumors of a license costing $10 million to start. Also, the NFL players (and other professional sports leagues) are somehow expecting a piece of this. So, if they tax winnings and pay players, your $100 winning bet on the Browns may actually only pay out $90? Lots of questions out there, but never be surprised by the ingenious ways government can find to tax you.” allfreechips , GPWA Private Member “This is really our bread-and- butter . . . A lot of our customers report they already bet on sports. We’ll be able to deliver that better than anyone else out there.” Jason Robins , CEO of DraftKings “The land casinos in the U.S. are very active politically and they will do everything they can to eliminate the offshore competition. Offshore affiliates won’t be able to fly under the radar anymore . . . I can’t imagine what it will be like filling out the paperwork for each state because approval for a casino in one state will not translate to approval in another . . . The one really good thing about this decision: It will take a couple years to implement, and during that time a lot of new customers will be eager for action.” econfox , GPWA New Member “It is as if federal officers were installed in state legislative chambers and were armed with the authority to stop legislators from voting on any offending proposals . . . A more direct affront to state sovereignty is not easy to imagine.” U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. , referring to PASPA in the ruling Q U O T A B L E S When the U.S. Supreme Court officially announced the demise of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) back on 14 May, the reactions from everyone, from U.S. Senators to professional sports franchise owners to iGaming affiliates, was immediate. The decision was expected to pave the way for a whole new world in the U.S., with as many as 10 states looking to introduce regulated and legalized sports bet- ting within the year. For this issue’s “Quotables” section, we take an expand- ed look at what people were saying about this landmark decision, including our own GPWA membership – which, as usual, wasn’t shy about voicing its opinion on what it all means for affiliates.
