GPWA Times Magazine - Issue 18 - October 2011

What did you do before you joined the online gaming industry? As I mentioned before, for the past 11 years I have been involved with the SEO (black and white hat) industry, so in addition to the online gaming industry I also worked in the on- line dating and adult industries, and the ringtones industry. I engaged in e-mail marketing, media, affiliation and worked as a superaffiliate. How important is page rank in measur- ing the success of a site? That depends on what you define as “success of a site.” If you would do statistical research on data up to 2011, you would probably see Google Page Rank has a certain correla- tion with a site’s positions in Google for its keywords. What happens from now on only Matt Cutts and his friends know! What are your thoughts on the accuracy of Google’s keyword tool? It is a rather useful tool that I mainly use to compare the per- centages of people searching for a particu- lar keyword in relation to another keyword. With somany sites tomanage, howdo you go about making sure your SEO work for each site is up to par? Up-to-par SEO is a very subjective term, but I would agree that managing many sites makes my SEO work a lot more complicated. However, we built our CMS in such a way that it is able to help with a lot of the SEO work. How long do you give yourself for re- sponding to e-mail? And what e-mail tips can you offer? E-mail that interests me gets answered in five minutes whether it is solicited or unsolicited. How do you manage your “to-do” lists? Do you use any special software to help you out? I discovered that when it comes to my to-do list I manage it better the old- fashioned way by using pen and paper and relying on my memory. How much time does it take to keep your sites updated? Each site has its own re- quirements. Big portals that cover many different aspects of the gaming industry require more work, and niche sites that focus on specific games tend to require slightly less work, although there are ex- ceptions such as websites that are dedi- cated to slots. What prompted you to join the GPWA, and how has it helped you so far? First of all I enjoy the concept behind the GPWA. I think that colleagues need to help and warn each other. That is why I make sure to check the forums from time to time and read interesting inter- views when I get e-mail alerts informing me they are available. Time management is one of the biggest issues facing affiliates. What time management tips can you offer your fellow webmasters? I wouldn’t say that time management is my strong suit, so sadly I have no tips to offer. I would, however, be very happy to get some time management tips! If you could have dinner with any five peo- ple, living or dead, who would they be, and why? I would mention some musicians, maybe, like Thom Yorke. But I love having dinners with my girlfriend and friends. When you need to get as far away from work as possible, where do you go? I do travel a lot but more often than not my travels have something to do with work, so to really get away from my work I need to get away from my computer and go down to the pub to have a drink with my close friends. How do your family and friends feel about how you make your living? I hope they are proud of me. I’ve tried to build a business from scratch and to create em- ployment for other people. What are three things that nobody knows about you? I once got a very sound piece of advice that said if youwant something to re- main a secret you need to tell it to nobody. What are your all-time favorite movies, and why? A Clockwork Orange, Forrest Gump – I like movies that make you think.
