 DOJ says intrastate online gambling is legalThe Department of Justice gave American online gamblers a Christmas present Friday when it said individual states had the authority to license and regulate non-sports related intrastate online gambling. DOJ says Wire Act only applies to sports betting The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday revealed that it has changed its long-held position and found that the federal Wire Act of 1961 only applies to sports betting. Gambling and the Law: A present from the DOJ Professor I. Nelson Rose said he believes last week's DOJ announcement is a major incentive for states to look at legalizing intrastate poker and other games. A way back into the game? Aaron Todd was pleasantly surprised when he saw that the Department of Justice released an advisory memo admitting that the UIGEA does in fact give states the right to regulate intrastate online gambling. PPA applauds DOJ's stance on Wire Act The Poker Players Alliance welcomed the statement by the DOJ that the Wire Act applies only to sports betting. AGA praises DOJ's Wire Act clarification The American Gaming Association says there is now an "urgent need" for federal online poker legislation. Top-10 gambling industry stories of 2011 There are times when the editorial team really has to scrape the bottom of the barrel to come up with enough items to fill a top-10 list. Nevada adopts rules for online poker licenses The Nevada Gaming Commission has adopted rules that would let companies apply for licenses to operate poker websites in the state. The idea for this week's poll question came from a forum thread titiled "When was the last time you have been to church?" That thread linked to an article about a scuffle that broke out between rival groups of Greek Orthodox and Armenian clerics in a turf war at Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity. It got us thinking about the extent to which GPWA members attend religious ceremonies during the holidays, and how that differs from the rest of the year.
